NEW PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT IS OPEN
Stanford University Hospital and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital have joined forces and built a new state-of-the art Pediatric Emergency Department expanding the existing Stanford Emergency Department. The opening day is December 1st 2005. The design incorporates a resuscitation suite with two critical care beds, two isolation rooms with negative airflow, a dedicated pediatric waiting area and new workspaces for physicians and nurses.
It will be staffed during peak hours with a team of dedicated physicians and nurses experienced in Pediatric Emergency care. Through the generous support of the community, the Davies Family Endowed Directorship of Pediatric Emergency Medicine was created and Dr. Bernard Dannenberg was recruited to be its first director. The endowment allowed the hiring of Paula Miller, RN. As pediatric nurse educator she will train and direct a new generation of Pediatric Emergency Nurses. In addition, and for the first time, a Child Life Specialist will work in the ED. Medical procedures can be confusing. Child Life Specialists prepare children for procedures using educational material to explain things and act as the liaison between the staff and the parents.
Designers and architects have created a child appropriate environment and incorporated modern information technology and entertainment. The patient waiting room and every exam room is equipped with an Apple iMac loaded with child appropriate movies, games, music, email and internet access. Free wireless internet is also available if you bring your personal laptop equipped with a Wi-Fi card. A large LCD screen in the waiting room will serve both as an information resource and educational tool featuring a looped slideshow and short movies.
